A Plaid Cymru Senedd Member has praised the “amazing work” of the fire service following a visit to a station.
Peredur Owen Griffiths, who represents the South Wales East region, was speaking after spending a morning at Maindee fire station in Newport.
During the visit he learned about the broad range of scenarios a station like Maindee station can assist with such as motorway crashes and river rescues as well as house & grass fires.
Peredur said: “I was grateful for the opportunity to call into Maindee fire station and learn more about the amazing work they do to keep our communities safe.
“During my visit it became quickly apparent that putting our fires represents just a small part of a typical firefighter’s work, particularly at a versatile fire station like Maindee which has a rescue tender and is able to assist in all manner of emergencies.
“The fire prevention work they do around the homes of vulnerable people is vital and their outreach work in schools is also essential to keeping children away from harm.
“I enjoyed meeting the guys on the watch and learning from them about the challenges they face.”
He added: “I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome on the day and for sparing their time so generously to talk to me about being a firefighter.”
